An exciting addition to my private practice as a Chicago-based Registered Dietitian and Certified Health Coach, my intention for NYOUTRITION.com is to create a resource for sound nutrition and wellness information; simple, delicious and nourishing recipes and valuable support in your efforts towards optimal health.
My philosophy is simple: I am passionate about advocating a plant-based, minimally processed, well-sourced diet. I am also pretty fierce about getting you in the kitchen – chopping, sautéing, roasting and having a blast. Cooking is a basic skill that not only promotes better health, but saves money and contributes to overall wellbeing by feeding your soul. The advantages of consuming foods bursting with nutrients and knowing how to prepare them are undeniable. It is absolutely worth both your time and dollars; it’s an investment in YOU.
That said, altering food habits can be daunting. If this is the case for you, it should be considered a goal for a foundation, the lifestyle you strive for most of the time – meals at home, what you bring for lunch at work, weekend breakfasts with the family. It’s not as challenging as it may sound. It might require a slight shift in priorities or a mild reorganization of your schedule, but it’s beyond rewarding.
With this in mind, if it just really IS pizza night, or salted caramel ice cream is calling (screaming) your name, or you’re out with the girls and decadence is on the menu, or you’re at a barbecue and there’s no way you’re not having a cheeseburger with everything on it – you’ve built a firm, healthy footing that supports the occasional indulgence, because most of the time you’re eating healthfully – that’s my goal for you. The only caveat I’d add is that whatever your indulgence may be, whenever you have a choice, make it the best possible quality and flavor you can get your hands on, and enjoy it – don’t mindlessly shove it in your pie hole and suck it down. Take a moment, be mindful, and treat it like a treat.
The truth is that the more frequently we reeducate our palates with food that is healthfully prepared the more we crave food that is healthfully prepared, and the less tempting frequent indulgences will be. Real, amazing, nutritious meals become incredibly satisfying when given a proper chance. I firmly believe that what we put into our bodies is the single most important factor in our health that we can control. I also give major props to thoughtfully managing inevitable stress and being committed to breaking an awesome sweat everyday. Simply put, consuming foods that benefit your health is not a diet, it’s a way of living that supports you in your effort to keep on living.
